In Word 2000, when I click on a hyperlinked URL, it automatically opens my
browser. Is it possible to shut off this feature without removing the
hyperlink?

No. In Word 2002 they added the ability to hold Ctrl and click to
follow the link but it's not available for Word 2000.

If it's a matter of trying to edit the document and accidentally
clicking the links then what I always did was press Alt + F9 to toggle
the view of field codes. That way the hyperlinks weren't active. Note
that all of your fields will appear in a set of braces such as
{HYPERLINK "http://www.microsoft.com} but once you press Alt + F9 to
toggle the field codes back off they will appear as they did before.
