It depends on the hard drive. Some hard drives were always "noisy" and some
were quite.
I would not expect the hard drive to work, even with the re-installed XP. I
would go out the get a newer hard drive and install it as my primary XP boot
disk. Once you get a stable XP boot disk, I would then put the "old" drive
as slave and the copy all the documents I can over to the new drive.
