I have had intermittent clicking on my HD for the last few months.
Also, a number of "serious errors". Is this a sign that the HD is
going, or corruption in the OS or both?

I am backing everything up, and I would like comments about Acronis
True Image which I am thinking of purchasing.

Its a 99% sign that your hd is failing
Your hd manufacturer will have a free checking utility
Acronis TI works fine for me; NB if any files on your sys are corrupted by
the failing hd, then an Image will copy the corruption
