clicking a file crashes the program that opens it

I just installed an old mp3 player on a new computer
with a new installation of XP2.
Clicking a file crashes the player but if I open
the player first then click the file it works ok.
Can anyone suggest what to look for?

MP3's are set for:
"C:\Program Files\FreeAmp\freeamp.exe" "%1"
