Click to run an ActiveX control on this webpage

My IE installation is broken.
I get strange useless "Click to run an ActiveX control on this webpage"
boxes, sometimes even on pages which have no ActiveX on them, just embedded
object such as background sounds.

The boxes are useless since you are not given any option other than to click
OK and run the ActiveX. Why are they appearing?

Anyone know how to fix?
