Hi,
For the freezing technique, one reason could be the contraction of the
platters allowing the heads easier movement. As the drives warm up,
everything starts to expand. The clicking noise is usually the heads having
problems moving within the HD, so with the cold temp, everything contracts
and the heads can move with less resistance, allowing it to read the drive.
Its one possible reason.
