When I click on any folder, the screen goes blank...

When I click on any folder, My Computer, My Documents or Control Panel,
the screen just goes blank revealing my desktop wallpaper. About 10
seconds later, it just returns to my desktop. Occasionally, it will ask
me to insert a disk. I believe that ths may be a virus derived from an
error message from internet explorer when i was using firefox. Any help
would be good...
