I just changed my windows XP settings to cleartype, don't
like it and want to change it back. When I
select 'restore default', the changes do not occur, even
after I restart my PC.

Restore default?

In Windows XP, right-click on a blank space on the desktop and select
Properties. Choose the Appearance tab and click on the Effects button. In
the 'Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts' drop-down
box, change from ClearType to Standard. Still don't like the look of things?
Remove the checkmark from 'Use the following method to smooth edges of
screen fonts' .
