Clearing Address Bar Entries

Is there a way or a site to go (Registry, perhaps?) to clear SOME of the
entries from the Internet Explorer Address Bar?

I am borrowing a friend's computer and will soon be returning it. I have
surfed to some web sites which, while not offensive, I would just as soon he
not know of. The trouble is that his IE Address Bar was full of
previously-visited web URL's that he had left, so I want to leave those
there, while erasing/deleting the web URL's I have visited.

I know how to delete the History, cookies, temp files, and clear the cache,
but none of that gets rid of the web URL's which drop down from the Address
Bar. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Jim

This may do what you need: http://aandrc.com/editurls/

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Delete typed URL's, note, does not remove entries entered via autocomplete.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelTypedURL.inf Right-click, select "install".

Gary Smith pointed to a great little program you can use, but if you don't
want a third-party software answer and want to do it yourself, manually:

How to Clear the History Entries in Internet Explorer (Q157729)
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q157729

This article will point you to where this info is stored in the registry.
Do this only if you are comfortable editing the registry and know how to
back it up and restore it in case trouble arises.

You must not be doing it right or there's a quirk in your OS.
Last time I cleared History in XPsp2 TypedURLs went with it.
My guess is that you are doing it using the IE Tools menu.
FYI IE keeps its own internal current copy of the list which
may not be cleared when Clear History is done. So make
sure that you don't have iexplore.exe as an active process
and Run... inetcpl.cpl to use its Clear History button instead.

BTW simplest solution (equivalent to the ones being proposed)
is to put 25 new entries in the TypedURLs values
and then close all your IE windows.

E.g. assuming Active Scripting is enabled for the current security zone,
entering:
javascript:1
javascript:2
...
javascript:25

should be sufficiently innocuous to return the machine with. <eg>

Also be aware there are two lists associated with the Address bar.
There is the TypedURLs list. E.g. press F4 to see it.
There is the AutoSuggest list. E.g. press Alt-d,Delete,CursorDown
to see it. AutoSuggest is populated *mostly* by the History
but it has Favorites and other URLs which may be associated with
stored AutoComplete form fields. So depending on which list
you are referring to and how it was populated there may still
be some entries which won't go away using just the procedures
you have listed.

Post back with a more precise problem description, including
your OS, if you need more help.
