I've found similar problems, but not really the same one on the forum, so,
here I go...

My boss is really ****ed that, when he starts IE 6.0 on Win2000 Sp4, the
contents of the TypedURLs list is cleared. While the window is in use, it
works, but when he starts IE again, the list will be cleared.

As he heard I know a thing or two about computers, now it's my job to fix
this bug, but I have no idea how, and couldn't find any help so far, though.
Here's all I've tried:

- Tried to delete his index.dat, as well as delete his temp files, history,
cookies, forms;

- Tried to create a new win user and got the same problem;

- Tried to input new links in: " My
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs ",
restart IE and... it worked!! There were the links I've added!! But when I
closed and reopened IE, again I got a cleared list... ;

- Tried to update all critical updates on Win Update, not helpful;

- Tried to scan for trojans, spywares and virus, found a few, but not helpful;

- Tried to punch the PC, no success either ;

- Prayed.

Personally, I wouldn't care so much about it, but then I heard from others
that my boss didn't like so much that I wasn't very useful, so...

By the way, reinstalling windows is not an option, as he's afraid to lose
info.

No, he's not. And the "clear history on IE close" option in IE is also
unchecked.
But now you've said that, I'll try to check if a anti-spyware or anti-virus
of his has any option like that, but I guess not.

He said also that hasn't installed anything new, so my guess is that was one
of the window's automatic updates that screwed things up.

Hi Carlos :-)

In order for URL's to be saved by AutoComplete, the URL must have been
"typed" in the address bar, or snipped and pasted in the address bar for
AutoComplete to store the URL in the Registry's 'MRU' cache for typed URL's.

In looking at the list of things that you did, I don't see that you have
enabled the AutoComplete feature.

First, be sure that the AutoComplete is turn on:
Tools>Internet Options>Content>check AutoComplete

That particular feature is an anachronism called TypedURLs.
It is a 25 (max) element list which is maintained in the registry.
You can display it by pressing F4. IIRC it's actually part somehow
of the *old* IE4 AutoComplete.

Elements only get added to TypedURLs when something is entered
in the Address bar *and* there is a successful open of what's typed.
We don't know yet if the user is actually entering anything in the
Address bar or if when it is entered a successful open is done.
If neither of those conditions are true then we would have an
explanation for the symptom (blank TypedURLs list).

In addition to typing the urls in the address bar, you can do a cut and
paste, then click GO to open the link.

Hi Carlos - You might try a repair of IE. Go to Start|Run and enter exactly
as shown (it's case sensitive):

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

and select the appropriate (Repair) entry. More detailed info is available
here: Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q194177 This will
reset you Search and Home Page to the defaults which will have to be
restored if you'd previously changed them; however, your other options set
for IE will be OK. This often cures a multitude of ills that we can't seem
to fix in other ways (particularly History problems, BTW ).

Please post back with your results.

As Jan mentioned TypedURLs is only a 25 item list which is stored
in the registry. While running IE uses an internal version of that list
which is why it may appear that it is working then. My guess is that
you have a permissions problem with that subkey that prevents IE
from writing to it when it finally exits. Perhaps you have some anti-malware
active which is designed to ensure that that list doesn't get updated
by third-party programs (e.g. in order to leave their undesirable links
exposed to users when they use that list or AutoSuggest.)

You mention TypedURLs in the Subject. If that is really what you are
concerned about (e.g. the list which shows when you press F4)
the History folder has no bearing. It really is an anachronism.
The new replacement is called AutoComplete for web addresses
(also known as AutoSuggest). It is based primarily on the History
and shows up as a dropdown list when you start typing in the Address bar.

If AutoComplete for web addresses is turned on and working properly
I think you would be doing your boss a favour if you showed him
how to use it instead of the TypedURLs list and in fact he might
become happy that the TypedURLs list had somehow become disabled.

Ok. Now you have evidence that you can start off with a non-empty list
and at some point it becomes empty. That changes the hypothesis.
My guess now would be then that this is a third-party program which
is actively clearing that subkey of all its values. In order to check for
this possibility what I would do is run RegMon (freeware from SysInternals)
filtering on just that key. It should show you which program is altering that
subkey.
