The cleanup mania

OK, some of us are just neat people with a mild
enthusiasm for neatening things. But there seems also
to be a constant urge to go out and acquire software
that will promise (and sometimes, no more) to make
our machines squeaky clean, removing registry entries
and files of various descriptions that the creators of the
software deem annoyingly unneccessary.

And why, really? Do any more than a tiny fraction of
us have any idea what thousands of registry entries
there are, of which we have no comprehension, or of
how many tens (I kid not) of thousands of files we have
in our systems that we (1) don't know are there, (2) have
incomprehensible functions we would never in a
thousand years discover by looking at them, and (3)
are, let's say at least half of the time, essential in
some respect we may, or may not, ever happen upon?

And we trust somebody we don't know to save us
from having them there? So that we can save a few
GB to add to the hundreds of GB we aren't using?
So that a system we thought yesterday was quite
adequate in its function might achieve an improvement
for which we have nobody else's evidence?

Gimme a break. Some things, like sidearm mechanisms,
need constant cleaning and attention to function well.
Other things, like the net, don't. My machine, I suspect,
will live out its life happily in the wide wide gap between.

Vent done. Thank you for your patience.
