Is there any free utility available (preferably within Windows XP Home)
which could clean up a hard disk and remove all the junk (especially .tmp
temporary files) and help me recover space from the h/d?

To delete temp files,simply go to run,type:%Temp% Edit,Select all,delete
all.
Return to run,type:C:\WINDOWS\Temp Select all,delete all (not all will
delete
as thier in use),exit..To make space on a hd,read kb307889

Yes, it's called "Disk Cleanup"

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup

Select the drive you want to clean and let the program analyse.
Select the items you want cleaned up by checking the boxes that
will appear and click on "OK".
As a minimum, select "Temporary Internet Files" and "Temporary
files"

You would have found the answer in Start>Help
