Much appreciate some advice here. I've read posting on clearing the temp
files in the sub-directory under documents and setting (there ... that shows
my age .... sub-directory??? ... FOLDERS Man!). But what about temp files and
folders in the Temp sub-directory in the Windows directory. Can I delete
these without risk?

Spybot reckons I can. Apparently some of the temp folders/files can cause
the spybot search and destroy routine to simply hang. According to task
manager, the program is still running tho

Yes, those can and should be deleted as well. Anything in use windows won't
let you delete it.

FRD-UK,

START | RUN
Type %temp% & press ENTER
CTRL + A (select all)
DEL (delete) & press ENTER

Not all files will be deleted & they include files that start with a '~'
unless they are a day old or older

Don't bother installing any cleaning program because its just more rubbish
to clutter your system

Thanks for the response guys. One thing tho, When I try RUN>%temp%, it only
brings up the files in the document and setting temp sub-directory. Generally
I have to go to the temp directory under WINDOWS to access the others. Tried
it this morning. Believe or not, I found 34,000 (no kidding) temp files, and
those outside temp sub-folders too, 98% of which where of 0 [zero] kilobyte
size!!! What the hell happened to efficient housekeeping code within windows!

Windows XP has stopped using the \Windows\Temp folder as the default
and instead uses \Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local
Settings\Temp. Anything that is still going into \Windows\Temp is
being created by an application program that has been hard-coded to
use that folder instead of complying with the operating system
standards.

Are you by chance running (or rather are you infested with) an older
version of Norton Antivirus? I seem to recall that this behavior is
one of the myriad of misdeeds that Norton crapware can cause.

Nothing wrong with running the free, "CCleaner".
It attacks lots of temp garbage. Made one of the PC mags this month, too.

No I haven't installed Norton, although it did come bundled with the laptop
which I bought last year. You're probably right tho as I have installed loads
of my favourite software some of which pre-date Windows XP(and even WIN
98!!!). Anyone remember AmiPro V7 which I still use in preference to MS Word.
Efficient code, fast, highly intuative and does just about everything Word
does twice as fast and with half the hassle. It came on just 7 1.44Mb
floppies!

Also tried CCleaner. Fabulous little program, Fast, efficient and thorough.
I'd highly recommend it.
