First, thanks all for the input on the 4870. I decided to buy it and
so far I am very happy with it.

Now I am battling dust control and soon dealing with slides that have
gunk on them.

What do you use to clean the glass surfaces of scanner? There must
have been some kind of deposit on the glass or the liquid in the
lens/lcd cleaning kit I bought recently had something nasty in it.

I ended up getting the streaks off the glass by using a paper towel
and a generic windex. Probably not optimum but it fixed the lense
paper / lense cleaner issues. I should not have bought the cleaning
kit at a discount store. Next time, Kodak all the way.

Me too ! Before scanning I inspect the glass of my 4870 and found
always some dust. And I protect it, but it's not enough !

OMG don't ever use paper towel on any kind of glass you like. You might as
well be using the stump of the tree where that paper towel came from. I went
to W*llmart and bought a 12" microfiber cloth for less than $3, it pick up
almost anything, does have a tendency to build up static though. Before that
I used an old T-Shirt made of cotton. Remember when using any kind on spray
cleaner...spray it on to the rag then wipe the surface, never directly onto
the surface itself. A new 4870 purrr....

The best cleaner to use is the spray you can buy from opticians to
clean glasses. It's gentle and it works well.

Agree about the microfibre cloth but, buy at least two. Microfibre
cloths are washable in machines so when one is gunked up you stick it
in the machine and use the second one, and so forth.

I've had good results using a microfiber cloth too...

Hmm. ... what section of Mallwart carries those? i.e. what use are they
sold for?
I've been using Pec Pads and Eclipse "Optic Cleaning System" (I think
basically ultra-pure alcohol) for occasional cleaning of accumulated grunge
(and an anti-static brush for ordinary dust).
