I have been told there is a clean up utility that will help
pinpoint problems with powerpoint files/slides imbedding OS
specific data, hence causing crashes in presentations that
were originally created on WinXP with Office XP and then
pesented on a Win98/Office 2000 machine. Can anyone tell me
if such a utility exists

Regards

Boy, I've sure not heard of one.

You might try "round tripping" through HTML, though. Save as webpage,
then open that back up as a PPT file.

I think that's how it's done, anyway. Steve, Shyam, can either of you
clarify?
