I can play most video and mpg well, but certain mpg-1 files will play
audio but no video. After some testing/reading I found that I have
279 codecs installed. If this is a lot or too many, how can I clean
this up? Or, perhaps start all over without re-installing XP?

I'm interested how you found out how many codecs you have installed?

Gspot tells how many codecs are loaded.

I only have 185 of them, and my system is a pretty basic system. A few
video utilities loaded etc, but nothing extreme.

I have 44 video and 27 audio. Haven't run across anything that doesn't
play. I haven't run across MPG-1.

All I've installed is Real-alt and QT-alt [Quicktime Lite].

These play everything I have:
Mplayer Classic, WMPlayer, IrfanView.
None of these 3 mention MPG-1.
