iv formatted the computer, before i realised its not
necessary when installing xp. when i start the setup it
says sumthing about the smartdrive or disk not being on?
and if it is on it will make the setup work alot better,
it starts with copying the first bunch of files and then
it just stops loading and copys no more files, does this
have sumthing to do with the smartdrive if anyone can
help with installing xp on my computer i would be very
happy.. thankyou

Ron,

Interesting site. One question. They mention that with an upgrade XP
CD, a recovery CD from the previous operating system will not work. I
upgraded my current system rather than a clean install because of that
limitation. Worked fine, though from time to time I still find odd
things traceable to that process. Anyway, I have seen references to
work arounds, but have never actually found one. Any ideas where to
look on this, assuming such a trick actually exits?

Hi Alan,

If you already have XP installed then qualifying media is not needed. Setup notices that XP is already installed. If you formatted your drive without using the XP disk and setup to do so then qualifying media will be needed. Your recovery cd will not work as you stated due to the fact it is OEM and not retail.

Workaround??? Not really unless you can borrow a retail version of any other operating system to act as qualifying media or use your recovery cd to bring the machine back to factory and then perform another upgrade.

Yes you can. Here is an article which my help.

If you go to the Install Windows XP to a new folder section of the article and follow the steps there.
The only difference with a new install is instead of choosing leaving current file system intact (step 6) you would choose to format in whatever file system you would prefer.

Please wrap your lines properly and turn off "Format Flowed".

Anyways, I have a workaround for this very problem, as I have done it
myself.

1. Install the OEM software on the computer from the OEM install disks.
2. Boot from the WinXP CD.
3. At the screen where it asks where do you want to setup Windows,
delete the partition.
4. Highlight the partition, Hit D, <ENTER>, then L. That will delete
the partition.
5. Proceed with clean install.
6. You may need to install additional device drivers for your hardware
which should be available from the manufacturer's website.
