I would really appreciate some advice on this problem...

My PC has run without problems for several years, but this morning, I got a
blue screen error on startup and (to cut a long story short), decided that
the only thing to do was reinstall XP Pro.

I booted from the CD, deleted, recreated and formated the C:\ partition,
then began a reinstall.

The system files begin copying to the windows folder. However, the process
hangs before completion and I get an error message along the lines of, "setup
cannot copy xxxx.xxx". I can press ESC to skip (not a good idea) or ENTER to
rety or F# to exit.

I have been down this route over and over. The process hangs anywhere from
16% to 96% completion.

The discs are clean and legit.

Please help?

Sounds like a bad piece of memory, issue with your optical drive, or a power
issue. Any of these issues could have caused your bluescreen as well. I'm
betting on the optical drive, but really can't tell.

You can try the following...

- Ensure the CD disk is clean.
- Make sure the IDE cable to your optical drive is connected well
- Run MEMTEST for several hours to test memory
- Examine your mainboard for swollen capacitors
- Swap IDE cable to your optical drive
- Try another optical drive
- Swap the PSU

Do you have a copy of the original Stop Error Report. This may provide
clues!

Have you disconnected all peripherals, except keyboard, mouse and
monitor?

BlueScreens coming out of the blue indicate a hardware issue in most cases.

This problem indicates a hardware issue as well. Take the computer to a
repair shop / technician.

In chronological order...

1. I did not keep a record of the original blue screen error. A counter
was ticking by (going up each second), stating that a physical memory dump
was in progress. After I saw this first time, I actually managed to reboot
and salvage a few files onto a thumb drive. However, that was the last time
I managed to boot up successfully. Not sure if this gives any further clues?

2. I'm sure the CD itself is clean and free of scratches.

3. The optical disk reader works just fine when booting from the CD, so I
guess we can rule out a fault there.

4. Not sure how to run MEMTEST. I hope I can do this from the Repair
Console, 'cos that's just about the only place I can go.

5. Sounds like I may have to swallow my pride and take the box to my local
PC supplier/technician.

Thanks for your help guys... I will report back on my progress.

I've seen this problem pop up several times on the MS bulletin boards and
others. However, nobody has posted a solution that has resolved my (or
others') problem.

Will keep you posted.
