I'm currently using Windows 98SE but Quicken 2007 and Turbo Tax 2006
will not install or run on 98SE so I'm going to do a clean install of XP
Home edition on a new 80 GB HD.

I have two very similar computers, the one I use and a backup computer.
In the past, I have cloned the HD in the computer I use, left the clone
in the computer I use and installed the other HD into the backup
computer. If there is a problem with the computer I use, I can use the
backup. I backup data files on a monthly basis so all I have to do is
update the data files on the backup computer and it's good to go.

Both computers have the same motherboard and processor, the same
keyboard and mouse but they have different ram configurations and
different cd and cd-r drives.

I would like to keep this two computer system in place. The two
computers are not networked together.

I notice there are three XP Home editions available. I can buy a full
version for $200, an upgrade version for $100 or an OEM version for $100.

What I would like to do is install a new HD on my backup computer and do
a clean install of XP on the new HD. Once I have reloaded all my
programs and reinstalled all the data files and I have XP running the
way I want, then I want to clone that HD and put the clone into the
computer I use. Since the computer I use is more used than the backup I
plan to use the backup computer as my main computer and make the
computer I use into the backup computer.

It is my understanding that I can use the upgrade version of XP to do a
clean install on the new HD since I do have the 98SE install disk.

I have never had to authenticate my OS before so I'm not sure how that
will work on the clone drive? I planned to buy two copies of the XP
upgrade disk so I can authenticate both computers using one disk for
each computer.

Is this going to work? Would I be better off with the OEM or full
version of XP? Do I need the Pro version? I found a comparison page at
MS and I don't see any need for the Pro version but then again, I don't
really know that.

Thanks in advance!
