Clean Install Error

Friend has a newly built PC, with XP installed. One of his kids pulled the
power socket, and now he can't get any boot to work inc Lost Good Known
Configs or Safe Modes.

Also he has tried Clean install from XP CD and Repair install - but both
times he gets the message "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed
in your computer".

This seems strange as a reboot from disk takes him to the list of boot
options (safe mode etc) - so the boot from disk must at least find some kind
of disk (albeit damaged), but boot from CD to do a reinstall doesn't find
the hard disk...

Any ideas?

Check the BIOS to see if a hard drive is listed and check the boot up
sequence. The hard drive needs to be listed and placed in the boot up
sequence somewhere.

Mac, that seems to be a common error with SATA Drives.

Run Recovery console. Run chkdsk /p. Try and boot after. Still won't boot
run fixboot and fixmbr.

Yes it is - CD is first, but when CD is not present it boots from disk to
list of boot options which don't work. To reiterate a boot from CD doesn't
find the hard drive.

How does one run recovery console from CD - repair install doesn't find hard
drive

Thanks, that seems to be a fairly plausible reason that I missed - obviously
then a boot from the (dirty?) XP install on disk has a SATA driver but the
boot from CD doesn't... makes sense
