Hi:
I hope that I am posting this to an appropriate group. I'm having some
problems that started about a week ago with the inability to use the welcome
screen. In User Accounts I have unchecked and rechecked the Use the welcome
screen and fast user switching check boxes to no avail. I have checked
control userpasswords2 and made sure that I was a member of the
administrators group. Additionally, several of the icons in User Accounts
are missing and shown with a red X. All three under the Learn About section
are like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Barry

If you have your WinXP install disk, try replacing the copy of
"nusrmgr.cpl" back to your "system32" directory.

Do this by typing :

expand x:\i386\nusrmgr.cp_ c:\windows\system32\nusrmgr.cpl

...where [x:] stands for your cd-rom/dvd drive-letter.

But if you have installed a service pack since getting your PC then use the
copy stored in :

c:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\nusrmgr.cpl

...to restore the file back to your "system32" directory.

Then, you might try typing the following into the "Run" box on the start
menu :

regsvr32.exe c:\WINDOWS\system32\nusrmgr.cpl

Then reboot and try setting the options in "User Accounts" again...

Tim:
Thanks for your response however, there is still no joy. The welcome screen
is still not available and only the classic logon comes up. The icons were
not replaced either and still appear with the red X. What's next?

Thanks,
Barry

I have heard of this before (as it was the subject of a thread in
"...windowsxp.general").

As a result of consulting my archives I have come up with this :

Red X mark appears in the User Accounts applet...
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/redxaccounts.htm

....I hope it is relevant and sorts out the problem.

Please let us know how you get on.

Tim:
Thanks you very much, the registry fix worked wonderfully. The icons have
been restored. I am however still having a problem only being able to use
the classic logon. The Welcome Screen is not available no matter how the
options are configured. With fast user switching or without. I have changed
the options with control userpassword2 as well to no avail. The shutdown or
restart shows the small messagebox style logoff and saving account
information dialog and logon is through the classic style logon dialog as
well. Anything left in your bag of tricks?
Thanks again,
Barry

On doing a wider search I came up with this :
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-593439.php

Three people with the same problem!

The advice [at the end of the thread] was to "uncheck" the two boxes in :

"Control Panel" :- "User Accounts" :-

"Use the Welcome screen"
"Use Fast User Switching"

....then reboot to the classic logon, yet again.

But *then* go back into

"Control Panel" :- "User Accounts" :-

....and "re-check" both boxes again!!
....then reboot, again!!

With many other Windows "problems" the clearing / rebooting / re-checking
of control-boxes has worked in the past.

I'd advise doing this before investigating other options...

....again, let us know how you get on.

Tim:
Thanks for the response. I would love to tell you that I haven't tried that
one already but, as luck would have it, I have, to no avail. As a matter of
fact, that was my very first attempt at a fix. I was wondering if a recent
update may have caused the problem. A friend of mine told me of the same
problem and I know that he hasn't installed any new software or made any
hardware changes. This one has certainly got me stumped. I was hoping to
find a solution that will fix both of our problems.

Still in need,
Barry

I can only suggest that you import the reg-file I have created.

I have tried to find all the settings related to classic logon vs. simple
(Welcome screen) logon.

To give you a better chance of getting your Welcome screen back.

BTW - You haven't joined a domain recently, have you?

Because the (simple) Welcome screen is incompatible with it.

If not, try my reg-file and reboot.

Feel free to dissect the reg-file and compare settings you have with those
in the file.

Dear Tim:
I understand about the joining a domain and I have not. I backup up my
registry and gave it a go. Wonderful! Worked like a charm. Thanks so much
for all of your help. I will have a go with it on my friends machine also.

Thanks again & cheers,
Barry

(made my day)

No problem... thankyou for re-posting that your problem was resolved.

So many don't bother, and it can be mildly frustrating.
