I unchecked the use welcome screen box in user accounts. At shut down, the
classic log off box appears with no problem. On start up, HAL (my computer)
opens my account without asking for a password, or displaying the classic log
on box. How do I make the classic log on box appear and have it ask for both
my account name and password???

1. Click Start - Run - type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 and hit Enter key.
2. Make a check mark on "User must enter a user name and password to use
this computer.
3. Apply the changes and Restart your PC to see the effect.

If that doesn't help then do you have a password with your user account?

The classic log on box now appears, but it contains my user account name!!!
How do I eliminate the account name appearing, so that I must enter it???
This is a matter of security!!! If my user account name will always appear,
I might as well go back to using the welcome screen.

The following information applied to Windows XP Professional

To remove the last logged in user name from the security dialog box, follow
this step:

1. Click Start - Run - GPEDIT.MSC
2. Expand To:
Computer Configuration - Windows Settings - Security Settings - Local
Policies -
Security Option
3. Double-click on Interactive Logon: Do Not Display Last User Name and set
the policy to Enable.


If you have Windows XP Home Edition then follow this:

2. Goto Line No. 150
3. Right hand side column - click on "Clear Last User on Boot Screen in XP"
4. A dialog box will appear and will ask you that either you want to "Save"
the "Registry Entry" or "Run" it.
5. I will advise you to Save it in a folder and run it after download. So,
you can use it in future as well.
6. Also, on the same line - there is a word called "Undo". This is an
another entry to undo the changes in future. Download the same as well.
7. Later, run the first registry fix you have downloaded.
