"The class installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this device"

Trying to install a driver on my windows XP machine for my Nikon Coolscan
4000 ED scanner which uses a Firewire connection. Near completion of the
installation I get notice an error has occured and that,"The class
installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this device". At
that point the driver installation apears to be aborted. However I can
communicate with the scanner and it works fine ...... until I shut down.
When I restart, Windows finds a new device (the Nikon scanner) and wants
the driver, which then fails again.

I googled the message and it seems that a few folk were successful after
uninstalling USB hub drivers. One post read as follows:

"Solution:
This problem is caused by a corruption in your windows registry.
Go to Device Manager and uninstall all your USB - hub and drivers. Shut
down computer and let XP or 98 reinstall USB and drivers. I found that
this worked for me after the "The class installer has denied the request
to install or upgrade this device" message."

My question is, does this make sense to do, even if my problem is with a
Firewire port?

If so please point me to a proceedure to safely uninstall USB hubs and
drivers.

TIA

I think you should contact Nikon technical support. After all, it is their
scanner and driver.

Try loading up a couple of the Windows bundled drivers for imaging
devices to initialize the imaging class installer. Then attempt to
install your scanner.

1) Open the Windows Control Panel.
2) Open "Scanners and Cameras".
Your Control Panel may be in the browsing
view, you will find "Scanners and Cameras" under the section
"Printers and Other Hardware".
3) Double-Click on "Add Device".
4) Click "Next" on the Welcome to Scanners and Camera Setup Wizard.

5) Under "Manufacturer" on the left side, scroll down, find and
select "Xerox". (the last)
6) Under "Model" on the right side, scroll down, find and select
"Xerox Network Scanners" then click on "Next".
7) Click on "Next" on the configuration instructions.
8) Click on "Next" to accept the default name of the device.
9) Click on "Finish" to finish loading the driver.
10) From "Scanners and Cameras" double-click on "Add Device" again
11) Leave the default selection then click on "Next". (the first)
The default selection is normally Manufacturer = "Afga" and Model =
"Afga ePhoto 1280 Digital Camera".
12) Under "Available Ports" select "Automatic Port Detection"
then click on "Next".
13 Leave the name of the device default and just click on "Next".
14) Now Click on "Finish" to finish loading the driver.
15) Windows will now load the driver files for this imaging device.
16) Double-Click on "Add Device" from within Scanners and Cameras
again.
17) Click on "Next" in the Welcome screen.
1 8)Windows will now load the driver files for this imaging device.
19) Reboot the computer then begin the scanner installation from the CD
that you received with your scanner

If this resolved your problem and you've verified that it works. You
can go to "Scanners and Cameras" and right-click and delete the Afga
Camera and the Xerox Network Scanner so you don't have those additional

An Update, This worked, sort of.

The driver installed okay, but when I shut down and then restart, the
system doesn't see the scanner. I checked Device manager and I have a
yellow exclamtion point next to the scanner.

I get it to eventually work by deleting the scanner and reinstalling the
driver, which installs with no problem.

Any suggestions as to what might be going on and how to investigate further
to resolve?

NO help from Nikon.

TIA

Thanks for your feedback.
The process reset the windows drivers. Maybe the problem driver should have
been deleted before reboot. Or sometimes process like this needs more than
one reboot or uninstall/reinstall.
Congratulations for solving the problem.
