For anyone out there who comes accross this thread, I had
exactly the
same problem with a friends Win2000 laptop and it
transpired to be the
goabot virus. Emergency virus scans in DOS failed to
pick it up. I
identified it manually when I spotted a process called
service5.exe
running.
Please see this URL for more details of how to identify it
as it can
use several different names for the process.

Once I deleted the references to service5.exe from the
registry,
deleted the file from c:\winnt\system32 and rebooted, the
laptop was
fine and everything returned to normal.
