I just purchased a new Dell XPS computer. I have tried to install
Civilization IV and I get the following error message:

Error Number 0x80040702
Failed to load DLL: DSETUP

I have updated directX; debugged it and the registry, all to no avail. I
installed the game on my prior computer with no problems. I have seen this
problem come up in other discussion threads on the internet, but I have not
seen a solution. Can anyone please help me?

Check what drivers you have installed for your graphics card. I guess you
have a NVidia card and minimal windows driver only. Download the latest ones
from NVidias homepage.

Thank you. I should have mentioned that I did download the latest 12/21
Nvidia driver for my GeForce 6800 card. That did not help.

I did notice that in reviewing system activity, my computer lists the CD Rom
as having a "bad block." However, as I mentioned above, it installs just
fine on my previous computer.

Hi Incanus,

That type of error could mean the CD is corrupt... Check the CD
and the CD Player. Clean both using a Cleaning Kit, and check for
scratches on the CD. Try installing the game on another computer,
if the game installs, the culprit is probably your CD ROM drive if it
doesn't install then it's the CD, in which case you need to replace it.

Before replacing the CD, try copying it to your hard drive and then
run the setup / installation program from there. To copy the CD go
to My Computer, Right-Click the CD, Choose "Copy", then Right-
Click on your Hard Drive, Choose "Paste".

Uninstall the game using Add-Remove programs before attempting
to reinstall it. (Start / Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs).

Here are three basic troubleshooting steps which I recommend:

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de and/or
Adaware (www.lavasoftusa.com) to remove any Spyware/Adware.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

If nothing including those 3 steps have resolved the problem so far,
here's more basic troubleshooting steps and information including:
The Safedisc patch
How to check CD for imperfections, and
How to Disable Virtual CD rom drives which is described at:

OK.

I didn't read carefully. So it's during installation you get this error?
Then I'll guess it's either the drive or it could be a defect memory module.

I've been having problems myself. I installed the game fine have been playing the game for about a month. I messed around with the main screen and found check for updates. I downloaded it and something in the download affected my game and now I can't play the game or unistall it. Has anyone ever had this problem and can you possibly uninstall it without using control panel add/remove prgrams? (It gives me this when I try and play thegame or delete the game:

This application has failed to start because D3DX9_32.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I've even just tried manually deleting all the folders for the game, but I am unable to install the game because my computer still thinks i have it installed.... please help me!
