CIM over HTTP

I have been playing with .NET and the WMI API, and getting a lot of usefull
stuff out of it. However, unless I am mistaken, WMI uses COM/DCOM for
communication, keeping it restricted to windows only machines.

Does anyone know if Microsoft intends to implement CIM operations over HTTP,
allowing remote management of other OSs? If so when, and will it become
transparent to the binary with a library update? I am looking to develop a
management solution, for which CIM is ideally suited, and I'm loving working
with .NET, but I do have the need to gather data from Unix boxes as well.

I appreciate any info anyone might have.
