Choppy music CDs and DVDs

Daughters HP laptop has developed a sound problem.Whenever CD's or DVD's are
played the sound is awfully choppy.I suppose it's got something to do with
the sound card. Device manager shows everything is working OK. Suppose I
should check for new drivers for the sound card?
