Pavel and Richard,
You are both right on the money. Uninstalling Zone Alarm cures
the problem. Now I'm using the semi-protective Windows firewall
(Sygate Pro gives me other problems.).
Partition Magic was either not working because the disk hadn't
been repaired by chkdsk, or maybe it also doesn't like ZA.
As you said, there is forum customer complaint about this,
starting 6 weeks ago on the ZA web site, but I didn't see any
response from ZA.
I am cured of the notion that chkdsk runs before Windows loads.
You should see my monster 1712 Acer laptop. Only one I know of
that has a 4:3 17" screen (and all the usual specs of a
desktop). And relatively cheap too ($1500-$1900). Two small
problems are 18 lb weight (including a 2 lb "brick") and 1 hr
battery life.:-)
Thanks,
John
