Chkdsk tries to run on every boot but never completes

When I boot my XP it tries to run Chkdsk because 'The file of directory
C:\$Etend\$ObjId id corrupt. Unfortunately Chkdsk never completes. If I
cancel disc checking the PC boots as per normal. Chkdsk wont complete
within Windows either.
Can any one advise on any way to fix this perhaps with a third party
untility?
