When I do a chkdsk /F /R, it gets stuck at Step 4 - 0% and doesn't
proceed further. I have left it running 24 hours straight and still
no dice. Is there any other way to force the chkdsk to work, I'd even
consider a 3rd party tool to run through the HD and fix any errors on
it...

I know there's also the reformat option, but I'd rather leave that as
my absolute last option, since this was my data/music drive (200 Gig -
30 free) and there just isn't enough space on my other HD (30 Gig, 10
free) to move the data to prior to the reformat.

obviously you are
having serious issues
if you are thinking about
reformatting your hd.

a suggestion might be
to boot up with your
win cd, go to recovery
console and at the c prompt
run your chkdsk

the repair install method
is avail as well.

In addition to the other posts, download a drive diagnostic utility from the
hard drive manufacturer's web site. That will create a bootable floppy or
CD. Boot from that and run the diagnostics.
