Is there another utility I can try which can fix this? I've ordered a
DVD-RW in order to back up the drive but I'd like to see what I can do in
the meantime. This is my data only drive but I'd like to be able to get it
working better so I can run a large game off this drive too.

What do you mean by "stops there"?

I hope this is soon enough to catch your attention.

I have the same problem, however instead of 8% it stops at 37%. I run CHKDSK with the options /x /v /r on one of my ATA hard drives. It gets through the first 3 tests fine, but on the fourth test "Verifying file data", it goes along until 37%. At this point it simply stops. I've let it sit overnight for about 10 hours and it just sits at 37% with very little hard drive activity.

Any ideas?
