chkdsk reboots laptop

I am running XP SP2 on a Toshiba laptop. My drive image software (Bootit NG)
detected an error 55 in the C: drive. When I run chkdsk /r , during Phase 4
(Verifying the file data) the PC reboots and there is no log produced from
chkdsk. This is a Toshiba HDD so there is no manufacturer's diagnostic
utility.

Any suggestions on diagnosing this problem would be greatly appreciated (I
prefer not to spend $100 on Spinrite).

Thanks!
