Hi guys,
I have two partions of my hard drive drive c: and d:
I'm using them from last one year no problem.
But for some reason i could not defragment my hard drive since oct last year.
And toady i run CHKDSK and om my drive c: it says,
"File record segment 11960 to 11967 is unreadable.
Is this problem fix able or not, if yes then how do i fix it?

Thanx guys.

This may mean that the HDD is at the end of its life. HDDs have
reserved areas to replace defective data blocks. Such defective blocks
will occur randomly during the life cycle of a disk and are no problem
as long as they can be replaced by reserve blocks.
When the reserve blocks have been used up, further defective blocks
will get visible and may cause data loss, because they can not be
replaced. Change the HDD therefore to protect your data.

The hard drive replacement is good advice by another poster. However, you
need to map out the unreadable area first before copying data else the
copying software may end with a cryptic message that means same thing I'm
suggesting.

I just want to clear one thing here, that i'm afraid is making different
sense about my statement. "I can defragment my hard drive, but i have not
done it from last 3-4 months". My C: contains W2K Server(12GB), D: just data
(10GB), and E: XP Pro(56GB).
So last night i done defragment on my hard drive on E: drive where i have
installed XP Pro. It went ok, but at the end of the report it says "it was
not able to defragment some files", and when i checked those files, they all
belongs to one folder.

>And this message "File record segment 11960 to 11967 is unreadable", i get when my system boot up and it automaticaly run CHKDSK on C: drive.

So three is no way to fix this problem. My Hard Drive is 80GB, i delieve
it's Maxtor, and about 4 years old.

You could of course try to find out more about this unreadable blocks,
but I do not think that this is worth the time. I usually replace my
HDDs after 5 years whether they are defective or not, BTW.
