I know chkdsk is supposed to create a log file, but I can't find it or
any "Scandisk" log, either. Where are they?
Thanks.

Go to Start > Run and type: eventvwr.msc /s , and hit enter.
When Event Viewer opens, click on "Application", then scroll
down to "Winlogon" and double-click on it. This is the log
created after running Checkdisk.

I just did this and the only thing that shows in the event viewer are:

Errors
Warnings
information

There is nothing there called "Winlogon." It doesn't appear either in the
lefthand window or in the right hand window. What am I doing wrong? Which
side is it supposed to be on?

As a matter of interest, how is a user supposed to *smell* that ChkDsk
will hide its log under "Application", "Winlogon"?

"This bahaviour is by design"?
What kind of 'design' is that?

Mine WXP-SP1 doesn't have a Winlogon under Application. I think it shows the
log in the right-hand window. I liked ScanDisk in W98 a lot better (and
FIND sucks in WXP). I have no idea what CheckDisk/FixErrors does when I run
it or how many errors it fixes. What about the errors it doesn't fix or
can't fix? How do we find and fix them - if any?

FS~
