Does chkdsk run a surface (hardware) scan in Windows 2000
server? Or does it just check file integrity.

Chkdsk /f does a file system check. Chkdsk /r adds a surface scan to that
reading each cluster. It is the same in all OS's NT4, 2000, XP and 2003.
