chkdsk fails in stage 2 -- always runs at startup

I have windows XP Home Edition, and lately when I reboot,
chkdsk automatically tries to run but times out in stage
2. All else boots fine though. If I try to start chkdsk
manually or to schedule it, it still won't complete. It
still times out in stage 2. I also get a message that it
is scheduled to run, and I cannot get rid of that.

Can someone please help?
Dell was no help at all on this.
