Chkdsk Failing to Start

Having read several messages, no one appears to have my problem. Today, an
error message regarding C:|$MFT being corrupt popped-up and told me to run
Chkdsk. I have not been able to get Chkdsk to run in either the cmd prompt
or My Computer in either Normal Startup or Diagnostic Startup. Also, I ran
the Western Digital drive diagnostic and there was no errors. Any assistance
is appreciated.

Can you back up important data files? Research in Google suggests you have
a very difficult problem to resolve.

All my files are backed-up. Another point - I have disabled several
"services" to free up space and improve speed. In an indirect manner, these
may contribute to the problem.

Thank you.

I forgot to mention that things have changed again. I no longer get the
C:|$MFT is corrupt message, but I still can not run Chkdsk.

Thank you

What services have you disabled?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? If partitioned
please provide details for each partition?

Gerry,

It is a fairly long list. Are there any services that directly/indirectly
affect chkdsk startup and performance.

I do not know which services are required to run chkdsk. The link which
follows gives information
/ recommendations as to settings:

Thanks for the information. Another problem has now popped-up: Internet
Explorer History folder is apparently corrupt. At the current rate I may
need to reload XP and go through the "activation process" again. Any random
thoughts on the situation are appreciated.

I would suggest you try cCleaner.
http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp
http://www.ccleaner.com/

With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. I invariably
recommend creating a restore point before using cCleaner.
cCleaner also offers backup before removal.

When using cCleaner think twice before checking before
Autocomplete Form History under Internet Explorer.
You do get a warning but this one has irritating consequences.

Gerry

I use CCleaner about once a week to help clean-up my files. I have not
checked
Autocomplete Form History under Internet Explorer.

Next, I will try and use the Windows XP repair function, once I learn it.

Thanks

Sid
