I am using a personal pc with Windows XP Home Edition.

When I try to defrag I get this message: Disk defragmenter has detected
that chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume. Please run chkdsk /f

When I run chkdsk I get this message: The type of file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock the current drive. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in
use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked
the next time the system restarts y/n.

Whether I respond yes or no and restart the proplem remains the same.
Rebooting in "diagnostic mode" doesn't help. I tried to boot in "safe mode"
but it won't boot in safe mode. I get a displayed list of loading files and
then it hangs up, tried to wait it out and after a long pause it boots in
"normal mode".

Don't know if this is related, but the only other problem I have noticed is
when I try to run MusicMatch Jukebox it doesn't come up even though it shows
up in my "running processes".

Thank you very much for your interest. I am unable to initiate the recovery
console by either method on the website listed. On trying to boot to my
windows installation cd, I pushed F12 to go to the "boot device menu",
selected IDE cd-rom device and the computer still boots to the C: drive in
normal mode.

The other method: useing the winnt32.exe utility and giving the /cmdcons
command gives the following message: Setup cannot continue because the
version of windows that is currently on your computer is newer than the
version on the cd. With the message there is no option to "continue", only
"cancel".

I also tried to run setup on the installation cd useing the "run" on the
start menu and got the same above message.

Problem solved. Searching internet for "recovery console" led me to sight
to download Windows XP set-up disks. These enabled me to get to the revovery
console where chkdsk /r fixed my problem.
