When XP starts and runs chkdsk it has already recognized
a problem on the hard disk, probably during the shutdown
procedure. You NEED TO let this finish and restart
clean.
If it won't restart clean afterward, boot into safe mode
(using the F8 key) then run the Defrag and Error-Checking
utils. You can find these by right-clicking the drive
letter | Properties | Tools tab... The Error-Checking
should take a number of hours to complete and you should
let it fix any problems that it finds.
