chkdsk doesn't run after improper shutdown/restart

I've had several but well spaced out improper shutdowns/restarts - such as
just a few minutes ago - but not once can I recall seeing Chkdsk run to
check disk integrity. I know this isn't normal, so is there any way to
enable it? The restarts/shutdowns were unplanned and spontaneous so I can't
for the life of me think why XP has ignored them.

Formatted with NTFS? If so then it may well not need to check the disk's
integrity/location of files.

If you'd like to run it manually?

Chkdsk, the reality:

Ah right, yea C: drive is NTFS, thanks. I know how to run it manually, I
just didn't know chkdsk didn't need to run when on NTFS. Is that safe?

Is what safe? That it only runs if it needs to? As opposed to Windows98
running it everytime regardless if there was a problem? Different file
system, it's "smarter".
