Hi,

I got a serious problem with my Windows XP (32Bit) Pro OS.
I have 2 hard drives installed on my computer like this:

First is 80Gb devided to
C: NTFS (10 GB) operating system / office
D: logical NTFS (75 GB) mainly for movies

Second 250 GB single NTFS partition hard drive:
E: for all my stuff, school works, Documents, 60 GB of pictures and
movies

Once a year or two when the system is getting heavier / slower, I
format the C drive and reinstall XP,
I just formatted my C drive and reinstalled Windows XP due slow
operation of XP.
After setup and reboot CHKDSK loaded and started run on my E drive
deleting and recovering files!!
CHKDSK created new FOUND directory on my E drive, and delete huge
amount of my files! Documents and pictures, some pictures have been
corrupted and now they wont open.

This hard drive worked perfectly with the previous version of windows
XP and it's brand new (about a month or so),
Messages I got from CHKDSK:

Please help me understand why CHKDSK delete my files and is there any
why I can recover my files!

1. Chkdsk, assuming you're using the one that came with your XP, did not
corrupt your files; that happened before you ran chkdsk; all you saw were
the chkdsk recognitions of the problems and its attempt to fix them.

2. It's highly unlikely you need to be reinstalling all the time like that.
You could easily be picking up viruses and other malware while you install
and get your AV and malware programs updated and running again.
You DO use a firewall, AV and anti-spyware, right? If not, that's what
happened to your drive, most likely.

3. Used your backup archives to replace your pics; they're gone and won't
be recoverable from your description.

it sounds like your
ntfs may have crashed - maybe.

to be safe there is an easy
method that might help - maybe.

download the trial version of
acronis disk director
and install it on the main
harddrive.

then use its recovery options/features
to see if it can scan that crashed drive
and show you some of the files the hd
had.

if this is a success then you have not
lost any files. however, in order to
repair the file system you'll need to
buy the trial. i did and was worth
the money.

if acronis discovers nothing on the
disk, then i am not sure what
alternatives there is. maybe
a file recovery software might
help. but lets wait and see.

Last backup was 6 month ago, since then I had a new baby, and some
family events.
Most of the pictures and movies are corrupted or deleted.

Hi there,
I just had a similar problem, except I've got 3 HDD's that I did a bit
of swapping round of, changed the drive letters etc. When I
reinstalled Windows all was going well, then next time I restarted it
randomly ran CHKDSK and did the same sorta thing you mentioned,
"deleting orphaned files" or whatever. Now a whole lot of my jpg's and
movies wont open even though the files are still there and appear to
be the right size.

Did you have any luck fixing the damaged files? If so, let me know
what program you used, cheers!

(I tried one of the ones suggested there but it didn't work, and I've
only got a slow connection at the mo so can't try them all!)

My computer is clean from any virus's root kits and other malware, I
use defender, Ad-Aware, McAfee VirusScan, and manual tracking
(msconfig etc)

The drive FS was 100% ok ! I used it for a year and nothing changed
except of formatting drive C.

Another thing I did was changing the drive's letter on the Disk
Management tool from H: to E: after XP installation process, can this
affect the drive FS ?

There are many possible reasons for this corruption to have occurred. You
will never discover the exact cause. For the best chance at recovering any
of the files stop using the computer now. Download a couple of these file
recovery utilities on a different computer and run them to see what they can
find.

last option is to send the drive to a data recovery expert. This can be

You should always have a full and complete backup. Data loss occurs out of
the blue and is a matter of when, not if. That backup should be saved to
external media such as an external USB connected hard drive, DVD or CD. It
is wise to have at least two forms of backup of redundancy. A drive imaging
program such as Acronis True Image Home saving images of the drives on an
external USB connected drive is a good, low cost way.

Tangential comment #1: I feel 10GB for OS and Office is insufficient.
I would suggest at least 20 GB

Thank you all for your help and suggestions,

After a painful 80$ fine (and extra 300$ for a backup drive) I got
Recover My files Running for 20 hours now, Hope it will work.
like my father said : "life is the university, this is the tuition"...

Is there any option to tell XP to treat the Hard Drive as read only?
I disabled the thumbnails cashing, system restore on the drive, but I
am afraid of other things (recycle bin, other things XP might write to
it)


About the 10GB on drive C
My paging file is located on drive D (2 Gb file)

Windows XP Professional recommendation is 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of
available hard disk space

Office XP :
210 MB of available hard-disk space is required for the default
configuration of Standard.

C format is not a constant ritual, I am a software developer, and I do
mess around with installations, an registry, so the system is becoming
slower.
