chkdsk boot loop

Working on an XP Pro computer and this has got me stumped.

Computer boots to chkdsk, chkdsk completes, the system reboots before
displaying the welcome screen. This process just repeats, sometimes in
between it will ask to boot into safe mode, etc, but not every time.

When I attempt to boot into safe mode (any type) it hangs after loading
mup.sys and just cranks the hard drive.

I booted into the recovery console and ran chkdsk /r from there and it
completed fine with no errors, rebooted and that didn't help.
I've repaired the mbr and the boot config.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get chkdsk to complete, so the "dirty
bit" gets set and I can get out of this loop? I cant manually set query the
status of the dirty bit because fsutil doesn't seem to work from the
recovery console at all.

Any help would be appreciated, I REALLY REALLY don't want to have to format
this machine.

Thanks,

::CORY::

You obviously haven't tried to find this answer on your own at places such
as Google et al. If you had, you'd have found these links right on the first
page of results:
http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_keep_chk..._start_up.html

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1038334232

http://www.techsupportforum.com/micr...er-turned.html

http://www.computing.net/answers/win...up/172247.html

and many more. You really need to learn to use a Search Engine; you'd
already have the problem solved, most likely, if you had.

You could also do with reading a few web pages about how to post to usenet
for assistance. In reality you've given so little information that,
depending, there could be many more answers to your questions. You haven't
even mentioned your version of XP, IF that's what you're using. No mention
of error messages if any, nothing about how it started happening, etc. etc.
etc..

Twayne

Have you tried this method:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=mup.sys

It leads to this and others:

Good luck,
