chkdsk/autochk hangs

I never get past 0 percent when I reach step 4 (Verify
file data) in the autochk routine. I know the is at least
1 file listed that does not exist in a directory and the
sytem won't allow me to manualy delete it. What utility
can you recommend to clean up this problem
