When I run chkdsk at the command line it lists about 15 files that
have problems. Most error messages say "The first allocation unit is
not valid." A couple say, "The size of the file is not valid."

Then is says run chkdsk with it /F option to correct errors.

I do this and it says the scan is scheduled for the next bootup. I
think this runs ScanDisk. Whatever it runs, scans the disk when I
reboot (taking longer to do it than chkdsk) and reports "Found no
problems"

Chkdsk thinks there are several problems and lists them. ScanDisk
thinks there are disk/file errors.

What does this mean and how do I get them to agree.

Incidentally, when I do a defrag it lists a bunch of files it says it
can defrag. I don't know if these problems are related?

Hi

Running chkdsk on a drive that is in use (ie: the drive you are running
Windows from) can sometimes make it report problems, even so there
aren't any.

If chkdsk reports no errors found, when run during Windows start-up or
from the recovery console everything should be fine.
