I keep getting a dialog box saying, "C:\$Secure is corrupt and unreadable,"
then it tells me to run the Chkdsk utility. I've done this several times,
but still keep getting the box. What should I do?

What form of Chkdsk >? Without any qualifiers it is simply a cursory
Chkdsk. To fix/resolve your MFT issues may require a boot time run
of Chkdsk C: with the qualifier /R. This can only be run at boot prior
to Windows XP loading.

NOTE: Running Chkdsk with /F or /R can and may remove data in the
process of repairing inconsistencies. BE SURE your data is
backed up and verified before running Chkdsk in this mode.

you may need to
run the utility from
the disk system
prompt.

boot up with a
xp cd then click
repair to initiate
the recovery console.

at the disk prompt
run>:

chkdsk /p
fixboot

then "exit", remove cd
and see if it resolves
the problem.

if not then try running
chkdsk /r next time.
