Apologize for being late to respond, but I enlisted local technical help and
now my PC runs the check disk utility. I got help when I viewed Event Viewer
and noticed almost 59,000 system errors that had occurred in less than a
week. My Program Files (x86)\HP directory was corrupt and unreadable and I
learned that HP updates originate there, hence they were probably the source
of my massive amount of errors. A restore to original factory settings was
initiated, check disk utility ran as did the disk defrag and afterwards all
HP and Microsoft updates were installed. Thanks all who responded to my
question.
Now, one story from HP support, after calling and requesting what was in the
Program Files (x86)\HP directory and telling them it was corrupt and
unreadable, I was asked to perform a check disk utility scan. Of course, at
that time it failed. I was told it was my antivirus program preventing the
utility from initiating. I told them I was using AVG Free. The response was
that HP computers with Vista were made to run on Norton Internet Security
2008 only and I was directed to the HP Shopping website to purchase and
install it. I didn't buy his answer or Norton.
