Hi,

I have a motherboard with I think an Nforce4 chip set. The chip set
fan is very noisy and is slowing driving me crazy. I tried putting a
drop of fine oil in the fan but it didn't help. I want to get a new
fan.

The new fan does not have to be exactly like the stock fan but it
needs to somehow be attached so it can work and be quiet. I think any
replacement fan will be quieter that what I have now. Also I have a
big pci-express vid card that hangs over the chip set a little, so I'd
have position the fan...

Could anyone recommend a replacement fan that might work?

I haven't had a MB with a chipset fan, but I would suggest googling for "gigabyte XXX chipset fan", substituting your
model number for XXX. Check out the vendor sites like Newegg, Tiger Direct, or even Amazon.

They'll all basically work, just a matter of size, rpm, and temp.
results you're comfortable with. Got one about that size inside a
stereo amplifier. Ball-bearing replacement be better, less likely up
for replacement sooner than a sleeved-unit that gets noisy before
freezing up. Exact fit may be if-fy though measure it and search the
supply houses. Shouldn't be much more than a buck for the bearings,
and if hard to find, not so much functionally to duplicate with
makeshift housing if needed. Couple of screws holding the existing
plate on (modify or make another plate), and a soldering iron to tie
the fan into a suitable mylar adapter. I used to stick fans all over
cases before they got bigger and engineered to be less worthless.
Come to think of it, got a great cpu cooler running 88 with a bare
chipset reading 120F.

Any approximately 40-70mm fan should work, and sometimes it's cheaper
to buy a whole CPU heatsink/fan for an old Socket 7, Socket 370, or
Socket A CPU. You don't have to attach the fan in the exact same
spot, but do use some sheet metal screws to anchor it securely between
the heatsink fins. The fan may cool better if it's elevated 1/8" -
1/4" above the fins, and covering the heatsink fins beyond the fan can
also help (2L soda bottle plastic is good for this) Try to get the
biggest, slowest one with curve swept blades and the most blades.
SVC.com, Geeks.com, and NewEgg are good, but the widest variety of
fans seems to be from Jameco.com

That's not going to be easy to fix.

The profile must be kept low, if you expect to use all the
expansion slots.

The fan itself, looks like it doesn't have a framework around it.
You'd have to remove the aluminum top, to get at the fan. You'd
have to examine the base of the fan (hub), to see what shape it
has and how it fits.

In your favor, at least the two white pushpins look to be in
a standard orientation. If you replace the whole cooler with
something, you need to check the center-to-center spacing on
the two pins, when selecting a substitute cooler.

I expect it is a 12V fan, as it looks like it might be going
to a standard motherboard header. You might probe with a voltmeter
and double-check that the red and black are 12V and GND.

Some motherboard companies, sell replacement parts. For example,
this store handles North America, for Asus motherboards.

A device like this, may work without adding any fan to it,
or a regular case cooling fan of some sort can be used. Coolers like
this may be rotated two ways, such that the fins don't get in the
way.

I have seen bare fans for sale, but I don't generally keep
bookmarks for such things. The sites that sell them, may
not stock them forever.
