I can no longer input in Chinese. Can't remember for sure but this may have
been so since I reinstalled a few months ago.

Alt+shift still brings up CH keyboard, and Chinese continues to display
correctly, but when I try typing it doesn't come out as Chinese.

PS - just remembered I recently typed Chinese correctly into Word, so it's
nothing to do with the reinstall. It's just stopped working. Anyone know
how I can resurrect it?

I am not sure about exact problem.
But I am assuming that you have no language bar displayed.

In that case try this
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

move down to line 194 (right side)
and save reg file from "Restore" (File called "langbarrestore.reg")
merge that reg file into your registry.
Then restart PC.

Good Luck

I don't think that's the problem. The language of the keyboard is displayed
correctly in the task bar, and switches correctly between English and
Chinese. In Excel I have always had intermittent problems, in that from time
to time text would come out in English, even though the task bar was still
indicating Chinese keyboard. Closing and opening Excel would fix it.

Now the problem is permanent, in all applications. There is a difference
between what the system displays itself as doing, and what it actually is
doing.

Perhaps you should change your "Language for non-unicode programs" to
"Chinese (RPC)" in "Regional and Language Options" in "Control Panel".
