Freeware chess programs were discussed most recently on January 2 in this
group. As a result of the brief discussion, I installed "Pawn" from here:
http://www.pawnchess.com/4668.html and have been quite happy with it, aside
from the fact that it beats me when I make stupid moves. This was
recommended by poster "Mark B":

HTH,
Ian.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I cannot use the program mentioned as I
am afflicted with XP.

Here is a "Repost: from Ian . . . . .

I just installed Pawn 2 from http://www.pawnchess.com/4668.html It's
not a
3-D board, but it looks nice enough. You move the pieces simply by
clicking
on them and dragging them to the desired square. The beginner level
has
options for how likely the computer is to make a "mistake." I just
played
one game moments ago- the first game of chess I've played in over a
decade,
actually. I lost, somewhat narrowly, and only then because I made
*many*
really, really STUPID moves. I can't believe that I used to be
semi-competent at this game!

Anyway, this could be one for you to try with your kid. It's
freeware,
installed easily, plays easily, and has an optional voice pack for
"check"
and, in my case, "checkmate."

Regards,
Ian.

I used to have a game called Battle Chess that ran on my old Apple computer.
I wonder if there is anything like that out there form my new Windows XP? I
loved the graphics on that old program and the mayhem that was created when
you made a good move. )

Yes, thanks for bringing my earlier words back to haunt me. Really stupid
moves are indeed my undoing. I wonder if this recent tendency on my part is
a side-effect of the fact that my decade away from the chess board has been
filled with thousands of hours of video games. Video games frequently
reward those who make sudden, unexpected moves with little or *no* thought.
Opponents on that ancient 64-square battlefield are far less forgiving.

Regards,
Ian.
