I was at the windows update page checking for installation. After clicking at
either the 'Custom' or 'Express' button, my system got shut down in the midst
of checking for update.

This is the first time I encountered this error. Previous checking and
installation of updates are ok.

OS version is XP Professional SP 1a.

Has anyone encountered this before?

Post your thread in the windowsupdate group - your problem has been
discussed in there, but not in this group.
